Why remote behavioural consulting often works BETTER than face-to-face:
- Face to face sessions can be stressful for dogs. Think about it – a stranger comes into their space AND borrows their caregiver’s attention for up to 2 hours – NOT COOL. For fearful or reactive dogs this can be very distressing and the caregiver may not be able to turn their full attention to the consultation.
- The dog is likely to deviate from their normal behaviour with a new person around, which means that it’s not that useful from an observational perspective for the consultant.
- It’s unethical to set up a ‘fake’ situation in order to observe the behaviour in question – video recordings are actually much better for data purposes.
- Remote sessions or transcripts are easy to record so no important data is ever missed.
- You don’t have to tidy up your house before the session!
